COL stands for centre of lift, the theoretical point on an airframe where the sum total of all aerodynamic lift is concentrated. Engineers must carefully balance this point against the aircraft's center of gravity to ensure stable flight dynamics. If the COL shifts too far forward or aft during flight, the aircraft can become uncontrollable in pitch.
If we sweep the wings back any further, the COL will shift aft and ruin our pitch stability.
