The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) is a series of suborbital astrophysics payloads flown on sounding rockets to measure near-infrared fluctuations in the cosmic background light. By briefly flying above the Earth's atmosphere, the instrument can capture emissions from the first galaxies and stars that formed after the Big Bang. The short flight time is sufficient because the sensors are highly sensitive and do not require long exposures.
