SRB
SRB turns up in 2 fields: corrosion, aviation. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
SRB in corrosion
Sulfate-reducing bacteria: oxygen-free microbes that make hydrogen sulfide and drive much MIC.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria: microbes that live without oxygen and turn sulfate into sulfide, producing H2S, black iron sulfide deposits and sometimes souring whole reservoirs. They thrive under deposits, in stagnant water, tank bottoms, water floods and wet soil around pipe. SRB are counted with serial dilution vials or DNA methods such as qPCR and controlled with biocides, pigging and flow; many CP engineers apply a -950 mV criterion where they are active.
"SRB came back four bottles positive, so the glutaraldehyde batch starts this week."
SRB in aviation
A solid rocket booster used to provide heavy initial thrust during a launch.
Solid rocket booster. These are large, strap-on motors packed with a solid propellant mixture that provide the bulk of a launch vehicle's thrust during the initial ascent. Once ignited, they cannot be throttled or shut down and must burn until the fuel is exhausted, after which they are jettisoned.
"We have SRB separation, vehicle is continuing on the main engines."
