Silo
Silo turns up in 2 fields: farming, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Silo in farming
A tall, cylindrical storage structure used to ferment and store high-moisture forage crops.
A silo holds chopped green crops under anaerobic conditions to ferment them into silage, a nutritious winter feed for livestock. Traditional upright silos are built from concrete staves, steel, or fiberglass and unload from the top or bottom. The tight seal prevents oxygen from spoiling the packed material, allowing lactic acid bacteria to preserve the feed.
"The blower pipe clogged up halfway through filling the blue silo with corn silage."
Silo in telecom & it
An isolated system or data repository that does not share information with other parts of an organization.
A data silo or information silo occurs when a specific department or application stores data in a way that prevents other systems from accessing it. In IT infrastructure, these isolated environments create redundant work, complicate integrations, and prevent unified reporting. Engineers often have to build custom APIs or middleware to break them down and allow cross-system communication.
"We need to pull the customer records from the billing silo before we can migrate to the new CRM."
