Relay
Relay turns up in 2 fields: electronics, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Relay in electronics
An electrically operated switch that uses a small control signal to toggle a much larger load circuit.
A relay isolates a low-power control circuit from a high-power load circuit. In a traditional electromechanical relay, current passing through a coil generates a magnetic field that physically pulls a set of contacts closed or open. Solid-state relays perform the same function using semiconductors like thyristors or optoisolators, eliminating moving parts and contact bounce.
"I can hear the main power relay clicking, but the motor isn't getting any voltage."
Relay in telecom & it
A telecommunications service that facilitates calls between users with hearing or speech disabilities and users of standard telephones.
A relay service employs a communications assistant who acts as an intermediary on a phone call. The assistant translates between a text-based device or video sign language feed from one party and the spoken voice of the other party. This ensures accessible communication over the standard public switched telephone network.
"Hold on a second, I have a relay call coming in from a customer who needs to update their account details."
