Recovery

Recovery turns up in 2 fields: HVAC, tides. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

HVAC & Refrigeration

Recovery in HVAC

Removing refrigerant from a system into a recovery cylinder instead of venting it to the atmosphere.

A recovery machine pulls refrigerant from the system, condenses it, and pushes it into a gray and yellow topped recovery cylinder that must never be filled past 80 percent of its capacity. Recovered refrigerant may be returned to the same owner's system or sent for reclaim. Venting fluorocarbon refrigerants is illegal, and technicians must be certified to buy and handle most refrigerants.

"Hook up the recovery machine and pull it into the 30 pound tank, it's at 18 pounds now so watch the scale."

Tides & Water Levels

Recovery in tides

Finding an existing bench mark in the field, checking its condition and reporting it as found, damaged or lost.

The field process of locating a published mark from its description, confirming the stamping and checking that it has not been disturbed. A recovery note records the date, condition, any changes in the surroundings and an updated description so the next crew can find it. Marks that cannot be found after a thorough search are reported as not recovered, and a missing mark weakens the whole station's datum record.

"Recovery on BM 4 is a fail, the seawall's been replaced, so mark it destroyed and level to the other four."
