Polygonization
Polygonization turns up in 2 fields: surveying, metallurgy. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Polygonization in surveying
The conversion of raster imagery or point clouds into vector polygons.
The digital mapping process of extracting distinct shapes, such as building footprints or parcel boundaries, from aerial imagery or LiDAR point clouds and converting them into enclosed vector polygons. This technique is heavily used in geographic information systems to automate the creation of cadastral maps and urban models.
"The software ran a polygonization routine on the drone orthomosaic to outline all the new roof structures."
Polygonization in metallurgy
The rearrangement of dislocations into subgrain boundaries during metal recovery.
A microstructural process that occurs when cold-worked metal is heated. Tangled dislocations migrate and align into neat, low-angle boundaries, dividing highly strained grains into smaller, strain-free subgrains. This happens prior to full recrystallization.
"You can see the polygonization starting in this micrograph just before the recrystallization threshold."
