Pard
Pard turns up in 2 fields: mining, electronics. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Pard in mining
A traditional term for a miner's workmate or partner.
A historic and regional slang term for a mining partner. It originated in the metal mines of Cornwall, where men typically worked in pairs or small teams on a tribute or tut-work contract. The term traveled globally with the Cornish diaspora, becoming a common affectionate or casual address among hardrock miners in many English-speaking camps.
"Hand me that drill steel, pard, we need to finish this round before the shift ends."
PARD in electronics
Periodic and random deviation is a combined measurement of all ripple and noise on a DC power supply output.
Periodic and random deviation (PARD) quantifies the total unwanted AC components riding on a DC output voltage. It encompasses both the periodic ripple generated by switching frequencies or mains rectification, and the random broadband noise from thermal or semiconductor sources. PARD is typically measured peak-to-peak over a specified bandwidth, often 20 MHz, to ensure clean power delivery to sensitive logic.
"The datasheet claims a PARD of under 50 millivolts peak-to-peak, but I'm measuring closer to 100 on the scope."
