NDR

NDR turns up in 2 fields: electronics, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Electronics & Semiconductors

NDR in electronics

A non-linear electrical characteristic where current decreases as the applied voltage increases.

Negative differential resistance describes a region on a component's current-voltage curve where Ohm's law appears to reverse. Instead of drawing more current at higher voltages, the device chokes the flow. Engineers use this unstable region deliberately in oscillator circuits to sustain continuous wave generation.

"We need a component with a steep NDR curve to get this oscillator starting reliably at cold temperatures."

Telecom, Networking & IT

NDR in telecom & it

A non-delivery report generated by a mail server when it cannot deliver a message.

A non-delivery report is an automated diagnostic message sent back to the original sender when an email fails to reach its destination. It contains specific error codes and text explaining the failure, such as an invalid address, a full mailbox, or a blocked domain. Administrators rely on the headers and status codes inside these reports to troubleshoot mail routing issues.

"Check the NDR to see if the remote server rejected the attachment for being too large."
