NCO
NCO turns up in 2 fields: shop slang, electronics. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
NCO in shop slang
A non-commissioned officer who supervises junior enlisted personnel.
Non-commissioned officer. A military leader who has risen through the enlisted ranks to take on supervisory duties. In civilian workplaces with heavy veteran presence, the term is sometimes applied to frontline supervisors, foremen, or crew chiefs who direct the daily labor while management handles administration.
"We need a strong NCO to run the night shift and keep the apprentices in line."
NCO in electronics
A digital signal generator that creates a synchronous, discrete-time waveform.
A numerically controlled oscillator is a digital circuit that generates a precise, variable-frequency waveform, usually a sine wave, from a fixed clock reference. It typically consists of a phase accumulator that steps through values based on a tuning word, followed by a phase-to-amplitude converter like a lookup table. NCOs are prized in software-defined radios and digital synthesizers for their extreme frequency agility and phase continuity.
"By changing the tuning word on the NCO, we can frequency-hop the transmitter without any settling time delay."
