Facing
Facing turns up in 2 fields: logistics, metallurgy. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Facing in logistics
The retail and warehouse practice of pulling inventory to the front edge of a shelf.
Facing is the process of organizing stock on shelves so that the products sit at the very front edge, with their main labels pointing directly outward. In retail logistics and warehouse picking zones, this ensures products are immediately visible and accessible. It creates the appearance of a fully stocked shelf and speeds up the order picking process.
"Make sure you finish facing the beverage aisle before the morning shift starts picking orders."
Facing in metallurgy
A fine powder or wash applied to the inside surface of a sand mold to improve the finish of the final casting.
A specialized coating, often containing graphite, silica, or finely ground coal, applied directly to the mold cavity before pouring. The facing prevents the molten metal from penetrating the sand grains or reacting chemically with the mold. This results in a smoother surface on the casting and makes it much easier to separate the sand from the metal during shakeout.
"Dust a heavier layer of facing on the drag half of that mold so the iron doesn't burn in."
