Exposure

Exposure turns up in 2 fields: nuclear, farming. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Nuclear Safety & Radiation Protection

Exposure in nuclear

Being subjected to ionising radiation, from outside the body or from material within it.

In general use, the act or condition of receiving radiation: external exposure from sources outside the body and internal exposure from material taken in. In strict dosimetry it is also the name of a quantity measured in roentgens, the ionisation produced in air by X or gamma rays. A person exposed to external radiation does not become radioactive; only contamination, meaning the material itself, can be carried away or spread.

"He had an exposure in the radiation area, not contamination, so there's nothing to decon, just log the dose."

Farming & Horticulture

Exposure in farming

The degree of sunlight, wind, and weather a specific growing site receives.

A site's physical orientation determines how much solar radiation and wind it catches throughout the day and year. A southern exposure in the northern hemisphere receives maximum sunlight and warmth, making it ideal for heat-loving crops. High wind exposure can dry out soils rapidly and cause physical damage to tall plants, requiring windbreaks.

"We planted the stone fruit on the south slope to get maximum sun exposure and avoid frost pockets."
