Displacement
Displacement turns up in 2 fields: electrotechnology, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Displacement in electrotechnology
The shift of bound charges within a dielectric material when subjected to an external electric field.
The phenomenon where the electron clouds of atoms in an insulating material are slightly pulled out of alignment with their nuclei by an applied electric field. This microscopic shifting creates a macroscopic polarization across the dielectric, storing electrical energy. The electric displacement field measures this effect, accounting for both the free charges and the bound polarization charges in the medium.
"The high voltage causes significant charge displacement within the cable insulation."
Displacement in shop slang
The unexplained disappearance and relocation of tools or parts around a workshop.
The mysterious tendency of essential tools, hardware, or paperwork to vanish from a workbench the moment a worker looks away. It is a tongue-in-cheek concept used to explain how a tape measure or a socket can migrate across the shop floor without human intervention. The missing item is usually found hours later in an entirely unrelated area.
"I set my calipers down right here two seconds ago and they suffered sudden displacement."
