Dip
Dip turns up in 2 fields: welding, aviation. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Dip in welding
TIG slang for touching the tungsten into the weld pool or filler, contaminating it and stopping the work.
To accidentally touch the hot tungsten electrode into the molten pool or hit it with filler rod. The arc goes wild, the tip balls up with weld metal, and the weld can pick up tungsten inclusions, which show as bright white spots on radiographs. The fix is to stop, grind out any contaminated weld and break off and regrind the tungsten to a clean point.
"Dipped it again, give me a minute to regrind the tungsten before I touch that root."
Dip in aviation
A sudden, brief loss of altitude during flight, often caused by a downdraft.
A dip is a momentary drop in altitude experienced during flight. It typically happens when an aircraft flies through a pocket of descending air or a sudden change in wind shear. While passengers often perceive it as an air pocket, pilots recognize it as a standard atmospheric disturbance that the aircraft will naturally fly out of as it regains normal airflow over the wings.
"Expect a little dip as we cross the ridge line, the winds are spilling over the peak."
