BMS
BMS turns up in 2 fields: boilers, metallurgy. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
BMS in boilers
Burner management system: the safety controls that handle purge, ignition, flame proving and trips on larger boilers.
Burner management system. On big boilers this is a safety-rated controller or PLC with flame scanners, fuel valve proving, purge permissives, and every trip interlock from low water to high furnace pressure. It is kept separate from the combustion control that sets firing rate. In building automation, BMS also means building management system, so context matters.
"BMS tripped the unit on low fuel gas pressure, combustion controls were fine, it's the regulator upstream."
BMS in metallurgy
Bright mild steel, a low-carbon steel that has been cold-finished to a smooth surface.
BMS stands for bright mild steel. It is a standard low-carbon steel alloy that has been cold-drawn or cold-rolled rather than hot-rolled. This cold finishing process gives the bar a tight dimensional tolerance, increased tensile strength, and the characteristic shiny, scale-free surface that machinists prefer.
"Grab a length of one-inch BMS from the rack so we can turn down these spacer pins."
