femtobel

unitStandard termUnits

A logarithmic unit of relative power equal to one quadrillionth of a bel.

This infinitesimal logarithmic ratio equals ten to the negative fifteenth power bels. Engineers and physicists use bels and decibels to compare power levels or signal intensities. A value this small represents an almost imperceptible change in signal strength, typically only appearing in theoretical calculations of extreme signal attenuation in quantum acoustics or deep space communications.

Heard on the job

The theoretical signal loss across the microscopic junction was calculated at just a few femtobels.
