Middle mile

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

The network segment connecting a provider's core backbone to the local access network.

The middle mile bridges the high-capacity core network of a telecommunications operator to the local distribution plant or edge nodes. It carries aggregated traffic from multiple local loops or cell sites back to major peering points or data centers. Operators invest heavily in this segment with high-strand-count fiber to prevent bottlenecks before traffic reaches the backbone.
