Foresight

nounStandard termSurveying

An instrument reading taken toward a new, unmeasured point to determine its elevation or position.

A measurement taken with a level or total station looking forward along the line of survey. In leveling, it is the rod reading taken on a point of unknown elevation to establish its height. In traversing, it is the angle and distance measured to the next station to extend the survey network. It always follows a backsight, which establishes the instrument's current reference baseline.

Heard on the job

Take a foresight on that hub by the fence so we can move the instrument up.
