Abrasion resistance

nounStandard termRefractories

How well a refractory stands up to scouring by moving solids, usually measured by the ASTM C704 test.

Resistance to wear from particles in moving gas or from sliding solids, the property that sets lining life in FCC units, cyclones, cement preheaters, coal injection and kiln feed zones. The standard ASTM C704 test blasts 1 kg of silicon carbide grit at a sample with compressed air and reports volume lost in cubic centimetres. Good erosion-resistant linings lose single-digit cc, while ordinary castables lose far more.

Heard on the job

Abrasion resistance on the new erosion mix is 4 cc on the C704, the old one was 9, put it in the riser.
