A fundamental metric of railroad operations and accounting representing the movement of a single complete train over one mile of track. Railroads use train miles to calculate fuel efficiency, crew costs, track wear, and overall system density.

  • Car mile: A train mile measures the whole train moving one mile; a car mile measures one individual railcar moving one mile.
