Canon

nounStandard termPrinting

A very large traditional type size measuring 48 points.

A historic name for a large size of metal type, standardized in the point system as 48-point type. It was originally used for printing church canons and important display text. Because of its massive size, it was rarely used for body text and was reserved for broadsides, title pages, and major headings.
