Wavelength selective switching (WSS) is a technology that routes individual wavelength channels from a single input fiber to multiple output fibers. It typically uses a diffraction grating to separate the colors and a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirror array or liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) to steer each wavelength independently. This allows engineers to dynamically reconfigure dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) networks without converting the optical signals to electrical ones.
