An optical shutter built by placing a ferroelectric liquid crystal or solid crystal between two orthogonal polarizers. Applying a voltage alters the crystal's birefringence, rotating the polarization of incoming light so it passes through the second polarizer. They offer microsecond switching times with no moving parts.

The high-speed imaging setup relies on a ferroelectric shutter to freeze the plasma expansion.
