A historic mining occupation where an experienced miner took charge of a particular stall or working face. The stallman operated as a subcontractor, hiring his own crew of loaders and putters, and was paid based on the tonnage of coal extracted from his section. He was responsible for the safety, timbering, and production within that specific void.
