Hovercraft

nounStandard termMaritime

An amphibious craft that travels over water or land on a cushion of air.

A specialized vessel that uses downward-facing fans to generate a high-pressure air cushion beneath its hull, contained by a flexible rubber skirt. This lifts the craft clear of the surface, allowing it to travel at high speeds over water, mudflats, and ice without conventional hull drag. They are used for fast passenger ferries, military amphibious assaults, and search-and-rescue over mixed terrain.
