LPI

abbreviationStandard termLogistics

A signal timing phase that gives pedestrians a head start before vehicles.

Leading Pedestrian Interval is a traffic signal configuration that displays a walk signal for pedestrians a few seconds before parallel vehicular traffic receives a green light. This head start allows pedestrians to enter the crosswalk and establish their presence, significantly reducing conflicts with turning vehicles.

Heard on the job

We programmed a four-second LPI at the downtown intersection to reduce right-hook collisions with pedestrians.
