Fabric is laid in the trench wide enough to line the sides and fold over the top; the pipe and drain stone go in, and the fabric is closed over them like a wrap. The geotextile keeps soil out of the stone so the drain keeps flowing. The top overlap has to be generous, typically 300 mm or more, or soil works in at the seam.
Burrito the edge drain, full wrap with a foot of lap on top, before the backfill goes in.
