Rind grafting

nounStandard termFarming

A grafting method where a small scion is slipped under the bark of a larger rootstock.

This technique joins young fruiting wood to an established, much thicker trunk or branch. The grafter makes a vertical slit in the rootstock bark, peels it back, and slides the tapered scion underneath so the cambium layers touch. It is heavily used in topworking older orchards to switch varieties without replanting.
