A polyphase circuit is an interconnected set of alternating current conductors carrying multiple voltage waveforms that are offset in time. In standard utility power, this is typically a three-phase circuit where the voltages are equal in magnitude and separated by 120 degrees. These circuits deliver smoother power to heavy loads and require less conductor material than equivalent single-phase circuits.
We need to balance the single-phase loads across the entire polyphase circuit to prevent high currents on the neutral return.
