A thermal protection system for vehicles entering an atmosphere.

A specialized barrier that protects a spacecraft from the extreme heat of atmospheric drag during reentry. These systems use ablative materials that slowly burn away to carry heat away from the craft, or highly insulating tiles that prevent heat transfer to the underlying structure.
