A fusion rocket proposes using the energy released by fusing light atomic nuclei to generate thrust. By directing the superheated plasma from a fusion reaction out of a magnetic nozzle, the engine could achieve extremely high specific impulse and exhaust velocities. This concept is heavily researched for deep space missions because it would drastically reduce travel times to other planets compared to chemical propulsion.
If we can solve the magnetic confinement issues, a fusion rocket could cut the Mars transit down to a few weeks.
