DET stands for digital event timer, a panel-mounted clock on a spacecraft or aircraft flight deck. Crews use it to count up from liftoff (mission elapsed time) or count down to a specific maneuver like an engine burn. It operates independently of the main computers to ensure astronauts always have a reliable reference for time-critical procedures.
Heard on the job
Start the DET on my mark, we need exactly forty seconds of thrust.
