Back to back ticket

nounStandard termAviation

A ticketing strategy using overlapping round-trip itineraries to bypass airline pricing rules.

Passengers or travel agents book two overlapping round-trip tickets to avoid the high cost of a single short-stay itinerary. Airlines traditionally charge premium fares for trips that do not include a Saturday night stay. By nesting one round trip inside the dates of another, the traveler gets two midweek trips at the cheaper leisure rate. Revenue protection departments actively hunt for and cancel these itineraries.

Revenue management flagged his reservation because he booked a back to back ticket out of Chicago to beat the Monday premium.

Insider tip

Airlines consider this practice a violation of their contract of carriage and will often void the remaining flight segments if they catch a passenger doing it.
