Continuous variable valve timing

nounStandard termAutomotive

An engine valvetrain system that constantly adjusts camshaft phasing to match operating conditions.

This system uses hydraulically or electronically actuated phasers on the camshafts to alter when the intake and exhaust valves open and close. Unlike older stepped systems, it allows infinite adjustments within a set range. This optimizes cylinder filling across the entire rpm band, improving power output, fuel economy, and emissions.

Heard on the job

The scan tool shows the continuous variable valve timing solenoid is stuck advanced, which explains the rough idle.

Insider tip

A clogged oil control valve filter is the most common cause of CVVT failure, usually triggered by neglected oil changes.
